New York
New York City, also known as “The Big Apple”, is without doubt the world’s Metropolis: a place full of endless attractions such as museums, skyscrapers, fashion trends, flashing lights, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park and Wall Street. It is situated in one of the biggest harbors’ of the world and it encompasses five different county-level administrative divisions called boroughs: Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island.
About its name, in 1664 the city was renamed New York, (previously known as “New Amsterdam”) in honor of the King’s brother, Duke of New York of England, after the Ditches, had lost the city’s dominance.
New York, maintains its worldwide dominant position in industries such as economy, trade, technology, education, entertainment, mass media, art, fashion and in the global diplomacy, as well. The area is densely populated and has been characterized as a multi-language urban centre, since there are over 800 foreign languages that are spoken.
As for NYC’s criminality, the biggest shock for the city and in the nation’s history was the Al-Qaeda’s criminal attack on the Twin Towers in 2001. Nevertheless although NYC is the center of the world, it has a low level of criminality, with the number of crimes reducing every year-as the New York Police Department (NYPD) recently announced. It is assumed that this can be an effect of NYPD’s new tactics, or a reflect of the end of the crack epidemic, or of the slowdown of the population’s demographic change.
When Bill de Blasio became mayor of New York City in 2014 nobody believed that he could reduce the criminality levels. Nevertheless, he was very efficient regarding the decrease of the attack control, with the crime numbers scaling down. An example of his constant attempt is one of the biggest NYPDS achievements: the arrest of 120 wanted criminals.
But crimes cannot be eliminated in a city with 10.000.000 inhabitants. It is obvious that there is still a considerable number of murderers, thieves, drug dealers, gangsters, blackmailers etc, who take severe action every day and night in such a big city.
